Boats needed for Secchi Day 2011

Volunteers with Boats Needed on Aug. 20th

This year it’s a challenge, especially with the heat, but we need your help! If you have a boat or a friend with a boat, please consider volunteering  to help us gather water samples and take Secchi depth readings at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday Aug. 20 on Beaver Lake.  When you volunteer, you simply show up at one of four launch sites on the lake that morning, get your kit of materials, boat out to a location we have pre-determined for you, take the depth reading and collect the samples, then motor back to a launch site to turn in the results. It’s not a very long process, but you will be helping us collect data that will give us a good snapshot of the lake’s water quality. This is very important, since Beaver Lake is the primary drinking water source for Northwest Arkansas. You will be a “citizen scientist” helping to monitor water quality in your own back yard!  To volunteer with your boat, call Amy at 479-717-3807 or email Brad at bhufhines@bwdh2o.org.

This is the sixth year for Secchi Day on Beaver Lake! We want you to come and bring the entire family. Headquarters is Prairie Creek, only about four miles east of Rogers off of Highway 12. From 9 a.m. to noon, there’s a free Water Education Festival, lots of prizes, and a free lunch (chicken, hot dogs, ice cream, snacks) for the first 400 people! For more details, visit bwdh2o.org. See you there!
